Story: Running Chapter one

Chapter one: Change Blows
Chapter two:Where's your Happy Face?

Jake ran through the halls of the hospital. His faded white trainers squeaking as they rubbed against the reflective checker-board imitation-marble floor. His frantic eyes found what they were looking for. Jake ran towards the hard metal door that opened to the emergency escape shuttle.
Jake, grabbed the cold metal handle of the door and ran in as a loud crash sound bounced off the sterile white walls, making hairs on the back of his head stand up. Jake knew what the crash meant, though he begged a force that he did not believe in that it was not true. "AAAAAAAAH," the blood cooling continuous scream of his old friend blew any hope from Jake's head.
The words "Hope is irrational," ran threw Jake's head as the gapping mouthed, dead eyed, face of James turned the corner at the end of the corridor. I stepped into the shuttle, and closed the door in one smooth motion. The horrible sound of screaming cut out by the thick metal door. My hands flashed across the neon blue backlight keys of the shuttle's emergency access panel, trying to override the captain's command to retain ship wide quarantine. 'ERROR: DESTINATION NOT FOUND' 'ERROR: COMMAND NOT KNOWN' among other messages flashed across the panel's slimline monitor, as Jake tried frantically to control his shaking fingers.
The words 'OVERRIDE ACCEPTED: SHUTTLE LOCK DISENGAGE' scrolled across the mini screen and Jake heard the well awaited KLEOKCH of the door's heavy magnetic locks being unlocked. Jake looked back up at the door as a 'Tap tap tap' sound, similar to nails on glass, sent ripples of fear up with nasal hairs. What i saw would stay in my mind till the day i died.
James, my friend of 5 years, stared back at me. In my mind I thought of the conversion we had had in the morning breakfast canteen. He told me about some guy that had gone crazy on the lower decks. Something about a teenage waitress that had started an argument with his manager about salary. When the manager had said that he didn't even control the girl's pay grade, and that that was up to the high ups the girl had 'changed' he called it. He described her as going completely slack, this wide smile spreading across her face. James had said that she had such a sweet face that if the previous hadn't just happened, the manager would have probably been suffering from the butterflies for a few shifts afterwards. The next scene happened so fast, James told me, that his brain couldn't really process the details between the time when the girl grabbed the metal spoon, and when everyone on the deck started running away from the dead manager's body. James said that when he starred down at the man, before joining the screaming masses, that the old phase "mouth full of metal" was the only thing that went threw his mind. After telling me about this James leaned back on his chair, sighing with stress at the stressful memory. But his breath had cut out mid-sigh, and as he sat up to look at me, a warm smile stretched his face. Then he started to scream.
James was still screaming, his face showered with blood, from his victims. As James punched the glass with bone cracking force, I reconsidered whether all that blood wasn't in fact his. An ever-stretching crack ran across the glass's surface. I was still safe, thanks to the double-door airlock system, but James was about to get that scream sucked out of him. That thought stopped as soon as i realised that he was drawing back for another hit. As James' broken hand reached the glass, it shattered. The vacuum of space pulled his mangled fist through the window, at a far stronger force than he could have ever mustered.
"Fuck." Jake muttered as his death came at him in the hand of an old friend. The glass cracked, splintered and shattered in tiny shards which twinkled in the shuttle's ceiling lights for a fraction of a moment. And then, Jake was sucked out through the window, with the glass.
Jake floated in space, his lungs being squeezed with an unimaginable force. Jake's vision went blurry and he felt his tongue swell up in his mouth, which he just couldn't close.

  11. "he begged a force that he did not believe in that it was not true"

This is so true. In extreme situations, no one can stay 100% atheist.
